A Sense of Arrival: Nonfiction Workshop

  • Medulla Art Gallery 37 Fitt Street South Port of Spain Trinidad & Tobago (map)

“The practice of nonfiction is a practice of constraint, a withholding, an art derived neither from fullness nor from the lack of it, but from the need to extract (with some care) what has, whether by choice or not, remained within. Such that what “becomes of the work” or what “comes to be” in the work is based, as you might imagine, on what is already here—only the teller is left to arrive.”

Arrival: A Nonfiction Workshop

In this workshop, participants at every skill level will create a piece of original work using a range of styles—prose, poetry, lyric, objects, images, or a combination of these. We will be concerned in this session with the work of memory and our creative revisions of it.

Moments of guided reflection, intimate engagement with the exhibit, and open conversation will prepare us to embark on a series of explorations—writing exercises focusing on our engagement with objects of our past and how we remember them (or, as in a photograph, how they “remember” us), and their role in our shaping of the present, the future, and perhaps most importantly, the past.

This workshop is open to everyone. All that is required to participate is a willingness to engage with memory. No writing experience is necessary, though interested participants will be encouraged to submit a revised version of their work for publication and provided with support—advisement, mentorship, or editorial support.

Materials will be provided.
